Enrollment for Pathfinders

This enrollment is done at a camp setting and takes most of the day. Parents were invited for the finale

  • Each of the girls to be enrolled are asked in advance to list one fun thing they want to do in Pathfinders and asked to choose one challenge they would like to complete at their first camp
  • Third year girls are asked to try and find a way to at least partially meet each of the fun things at camp and work with the girls to reach this goal as best they can - even if it is just planning an event like down hill skiing and choosing a date when it can be done. If it is something like a hike or a challenge course that is available on site they should lead the activity with necessary adult supervision close by.
  • Second year girls are asked to see if they can think of a way to assist them in meeting the challenges they choose and set up stations for each one
  • First year girls travel as a group visiting each of the third and second year stations and learning to plan activities and completing the challenges. Second or third year girls can join in as well but should be asked to make sure that the first year girls get a chance to take the lead and express their opinions before they add anything - this is to get them going on challenges and planning skills.
  • If it is a smaller number of first years than necessary to make it last a good portion of the day have them choose two challenges each, if there are not enough older girls leaders can lead more difficult stations.
  • By the end of the day each of the girls should be well on her way to completing outdoor and camp challenges, and planning should be done for a portion of the year.
  • In the evening have a dinner planned and prepared by the girls over fires and stoves for themselves and the parents with the older girls taking the lead. This will allow the parents to see how the girls will progress and do more planning and more challenging activities at Pathfinders.
  • Finish up with a campfire where the leaders recap what the events of the afternoon were and how the girls have proven they are ready to be Pathfinders and present them with their pins. We always had the parents take the pins home so they did not get lost at the rest of the camp. We also always choose a location very close to the city to make it easy for parents to attend.

This is a good way to deal with making enrollment special when the girls do not want to be the centre of attention, or made to do something "silly" and still have the parents see them enrolled.
